8 Ways German Courses Can Change Your Life

Travel Tips - Ross French - October 9, 2012

Learning a language is both challenging and rewarding. German, in particular, is a great language to learn, both for personal and professional reasons. Whether you choose to study with a school like UIC or take a distance-learning course, here are a few reasons why you should opt for German.

german

Business opportunities
Due to Germany’s economic wealth, learning German can really boost your career opportunities in the UK and abroad. Many employers will favour you if you can speak German over somebody who cannot, as you’re likely to be dealing with the country whatever sector you work in.

If you work for a company that deals directly with German clients, knowing the language will improve business relations and allow better communication.

Study opportunities
If you study in Germany, it goes without saying that knowing the language is beneficial. Germany is a good choice of place to study as there are many scholarships and a great deal of support available. Many students choose to study in Berlin, a city well-known for its exciting nightlife, vibrant art scene and, of course, it’s top educational institutions.

A fascinating culture
When learning a language you’re also learning about a whole new culture, and Germany has an incredibly rich cultural heritage. There have been a huge number of German contributions to the arts, philosophy and music. For this reason, Germany is sometimes referred to as the land of ‘dichter und denker’ – poets and thinkers.

Just imagine, learning German would allow you to interact with profound artists and thinkers, such as Kafka, Goethe or Nietzsche, in their own language.

Not as hard as you think
German and English both have their roots in the old Germanic language, so learning German may not be as hard as you think. For example, the German word for ‘mother’ is ‘mutter’, and the word for ‘book’ is ‘buch’. It’s also a phonetic language, meaning there aren’t as many silent letters as there are in languages like French. Normally with German, what you see is what you say.

german

Most widely spoken language in Europe
German is the most widely spoken language in Europe. As well as Germany itself, it’s the official language of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. This means that you have the opportunity to travel to many different countries, whether for business or pleasure, and interact with people of various nationalities in their native tongue.

Add to your CV
Learning any language is a great addition to your CV.  Employers see it as a definite asset as it shows you are motivated, interested in other cultures and ways of thinking, and a good communicator. German looks especially good on your CV due to the fact that it’s so widely spoken, especially in business.

Germans love to travel
Germans love to work but they also love to travel. If you’re a globetrotter, you’re likely to meet many Germans along the way – they are the biggest spenders of tourist money in the world. If you are a world traveller, whether for business or just as a lifestyle, knowing German can be of huge benefit. It will allow you to interact in the native language of many of the people you meet along the way.

Personal achievement
As well as furthering your career, and opening up opportunities for travel and communication, learning a language can simply make you feel good about yourself. Whether you want to learn German for business or personal reasons, you will gain new knowledge and can take satisfaction in having achieved a goal.

Whether you choose to learn German at a school in London or Bristol, or get private tuition at home, taking a German course can dramatically change your life – all for the better.

Dating a Traveller and Staying Sane

Travel Blog - Ross French - October 9, 2012

Dating someone who shares your sense of adventure can be a terrific thing. It’s wonderful to share a desire to see the world with someone you’re dating, and it’s even better when you love visiting the same places and exploring the same things.

But sometimes one person in a relationship gets bitten harder by the travel bug than the other – and sometimes that bug is incurable. So, what do you do when you’re stuck at home while your loved one is off gallivanting around the globe? Here are some tips to keep you – and your partner – sane while you’re apart.

Keep communicating
It’s really important to keep in touch while your partner is away. Thanks to the advances of modern technology, it’s really not that difficult. Whether it’s Skype, Instant Messenger or FaceTime, make sure you and your loved one check in with each other at least once a day, even if you’re only having long chats once every few days. Just popping online to say “I love you” is sometimes enough to let your partner know you’re thinking of them.

Trust each other
If you have a solid relationship, you have to trust that your partner is being faithful to you while they’re travelling, just as they have to trust you while they’re away. A relationship based on mutual trust and respect is one that can survive any hardship, even if it means being away from each other for long periods of time.

If you haven’t even met yet…
If you’ve started communicating with someone long distance but haven’t met them yet, now’s a good time to get to know them. It can be liberating to talk to someone you don’t know in person yet.

Write it in a letter
History is littered with famous long-distance relationships that survived only thanks to long, handwritten love letters. Keep the romance alive with your partner by handwriting notes to each other and sending them snail mail. There’s nothing quite as exciting as opening the mail to receive a specially written note to you from your significant other. You’ll always have a record of the time you spent apart.

Embrace being alone
Solitude can sometimes be a blessing, even if you didn’t sign up for it. Being alone is healing, and it gives you time to focus on the things you really want out of your relationship and out of life. It also gives you a chance to eat ice cream in your pyjamas, hang out with your friends, and go to bed at whatever time you please. Spending time alone is an essential part of any healthy relationship.

So just embrace that opportunity to get to yourself a little better, and give your partner the space to do the same. After all, soon you could be the one jet setting around the world! Better pack your bags, just in case!

cancun

The best places to travel for a good party…

It seems like we’re only just back at our desks after a fantastic summer filled with Jubilee celebrations, opening and closing ceremonies and festivals galore. But suddenly the nights are drawing in and the winter coat is coming in useful – anyone else already dreaming of the 2013 holidays?

If you’re missing the summer party season, there are some destinations that should be at the top of your mind when it comes to letting your hair down and dancing until the sun comes up.

cancun

Cancun

Daytime life in Cancun is very chilled – you can choose between having a swim in its turquoise sea, or people-watching as you sip cocktails by the pool. As soon as the sun goes down, though, it’s a different story. America’s party animals take to the streets in their hoards, pretty much as soon as the clubs open their doors. Try tying in your trip with US Spring Break for the ultimate College Party experience.

Berlin

With its 24-hour licensing laws and tolerant ‘anything goes’ attitude, Berlin justifiably has a reputation as one of the world’s top party cities, You can join the pleasure-loving and friendly Germans on the dance floor to completely lose all inhibitions. House and techno music continue to be a strong pull here, with thousands jetting off for the weekend just to party in Europe’s bohemian capital of cool.

Mykonos

If you are holidaying on a budget, this relatively inexpensive vacation destination is a great place to party. With a number of clubs and beach bars, Mykonos nightlife is the perfect way to unwind from a hard day of lying on the beach and soaking up the sun. There’s a much hipper scene than the nightlife on many of the other Greek islands.

Ibiza

One for only the most hard-core partygoers, you’ll need all of your stamina in the legendary Ibiza. The pre-party here starts around 11pm, with the main clubs not even getting started until 2am. Night owls will continue past dawn to about 8 in the morning, just in time for the after-hours clubs to open. By noon you’ll be back in your bed, so get a good day’s sleep – because the party starts again in 11 hours time.

Miami

Florida holidays normally bring up images of Disney and wholesome family fun, but there’s a much wilder side to the nightlife in this favourite Brit destination. Head to Miami-ami-ami to party all night on its famous South Beach. Girls in bikinis, podiums, beach-parties, cocktails – need we say more?

Monarch Airlines provide flights to a range of top destinations – check out their website for more info!

Canadian Nature Through Instagram

Destinations, North America - Ross French - October 9, 2012

Canadian-Nature

Contrary to popular belief I do more than party. In fact, sometimes I go on sexy hikes. Not just any hikes… sexy ones. If you don’t believe me, just check out the pictures below.

After stuffing our faces over the long Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, we felt it was necessary to get up early (ew) on the holiday Monday and head to Halton Heights near Milton (just outside Toronto). Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time for apple picking, so I came home and ate pie.

Pie is good.

For those of you unfamiliar with Canadian artists, you can definitely see through these images where The Group of Seven get their inspiration. The Group of Seven are a famous group of Canadian painters, who painted landscapes. They would actually bring their material and gear to destinations all around the country and paint on the spot.
