The Best New Year Cruises

Travel Tips - Ross French - December 4, 2012

Do you have that painful debate every year about what you’re going to do for Christmas, and then for New Year? Do you go to his family or hers for Christmas? Or do you try to go to both and end up exhausted? Then at New Year do you wonder why you all get crammed into a pub with everyone else in the town, hopefully enjoying the atmosphere but thinking there must be a better option? At our house we had that discussion year after year. I say discussion to make it all sound civilised, but in fact it would be a brooding argument that would start in September and gradually wear away at us over the ensuing months. And then last year we were sitting around moaning about New Year over a drink with some friends and they suggested a cheap cruise to completely change the scene and have an amazing holiday with a whole different climate in every way you look at it.After just one trip we are completely sold on the idea and I expect we’ll be cruising into a New Year for many years to come – it even sounds great doesn’t it? Suddenly having to smile through Christmas is a whole lot easier when we know we’ll be off to a different part of the world in just a couple of days.Last year we flew out of Britain on the 27th and boarded our liner next morning for a week and a half on the Mexican Riviera. The temperature was just right for me and the combination of wild life spotting, gorgeous sandy beaches, and mad nightlife was all there for us as and when we wanted it. But actually we’d had a hellofa year and we both just wanted to kick back a bit and do not very much. There’s no better place to do that than on a luxury liner where the staff are amazing, the entertainment is top quality and the range of food is as good as you’ll find in any city.I was really keen to go to Acapulco, for the beaches, to see where the stars once flocked from Hollywood, and to see the famous cliff diving. I did that from the appropriately named Hotel Mirador. Those guys are mad! My other half spent the day strolling the beaches with some girls she’d met in the gym on the ship.

The high point of the trip was New Year’s eve. We could have gone to shore to a party at some huge club, but we chose to stay on board. Even though we’d only been there a couple of days we had already made some friends and we had a brilliant night. We booked the best restaurant on board, had a special dinner, then went to the casino for the rest of the night, and had the best seeing in of the New Year that I can remember.

Last year it was just the two of us. The children ridiculed us for going on what they thought was an old people’s holiday, but we certainly convinced them with our stories. This year they are tagging along. We could have had a family room, but they are both in their teens so we got them their own cabin. It wasn’t cheap, but the guys at Imagine looked after us well.

We’re not going so far this time, we’ll be touring the Canaries on a Mediterranean cruise. Only four weeks to go and I am looking forward to it enormously. I don’t really dislike Christmas, I think it’s a male need to complain about family. But what I do now love is my New Year cruise!

All’s Fair in Love and Travel

Travel Tips - Ross French - December 4, 2012

breakup-funny

By: Jessica Kamikaze

My first attempt at arranging to travel on my own was in 2003. I was seventeen years old, had just started my first year of university and I had been dating my first boyfriend for a suuuper long time (one year). So, as a pair of super committed, super mature adults, we decided to go on our first vacation together.  I demanded that we go to a real live travel agent (it was 2003! I was scared of the internet!), but he wanted to book online. Clearly I should have seen that we couldn’t agree on anything and were destined for disaster, but I was young and in love! We went to a travel agent, paid the deposit, and broke up two months later…So long deposit.

Lesson: Unless you’re really, really sure, travel last minute.

After that, I was hesitant to undertake any real travel commitment with any of my subsequent Romeos. Or maybe that’s a lie. It was probably because every boyfriend I had after my first one was broke as fuck and couldn’t afford fancy trips. But I still LOVED them, cuz I’m not SHALLOW.  Also, because dating wealthy successful young men would make mumsy too happy and she needs to understand that I’M THE BOSS OF ME.

…Anyway, my subsequent travel was almost always solo. But then I was all like “Oooohhhh, I miss my boooyfrieeeend. I wish he could be here to experience this with me. He’s the only person who understaaaands meeeee.” So I usually had to suck it up and stop acting like a total wiener to enjoy myself, or mope around and have a crappy time (maybe because I was visiting my brother and had to watch him and his girlfriend be ooooh soooo in looooove! Like, noooo, don’t worry about meee! I’m not lonely and having a terrible time in stupid Calgary!)

Lesson: Don’t be whiney and dumb, unless you’re visiting your family and they’re not paying lots of attention to you. Then whine. Lots.

Then, finally, after several years of travelling alone, I took the plunge and booked a one week all-inclusive with a boyfriend who I was relatively sure I wouldn’t break up with before the trip (we lived together and the lease wasn’t up until long after the vacation! And everyone knows you don’t break up in the middle of a lease term). We booked the trip and it went off without a hitch. When we got there we bonded over so many things: Caribbean sunsets, sugary blended cocktails, and after all the beautiful wonderful experiences came the horrible, gut-wrenching, misery-inducing sickness. He got it first, on our fifth and sixth days and couldn’t leave the room. I got it on the flight home. ON THE PLANE. Have you ever puked on a plane? Then sat back in your seat, only to have to get up and PUKE AGAIN??

Lesson:  Don’t go to the Caribbean making big claims like “I never get sick, I’m not a weakling” or call sick people “baby belly” because it will only bring you a world of shame and grief when your curled up and crying on the plane.

For the Young at Heart: Top Five Hottest Nightspots in Dubai

Travel Tips - Ross French - December 4, 2012

A holiday to Dubai is an event for everyone, and there are numerous attractions that are specifically aimed at younger travellers including theme parks, shopping malls and safaris. But for the young at heart, there are plenty of establishments like restaurants, bars and nightclubs that are great for relaxing in after a day spent touring the city.

Here are five of the swankiest nightclubs that attract the jet-setting crowd in Dubai:

People by Crystal is located at the top of Raffles pyramid in Dubai on the 18th floor. It is the believed to be the only nightclub in the world’s that’s located inside a glass pyramid with panoramic views from all sides. It was created by the Crystal Group in 2010 and voted best club in Dubai by Time Out for two years in a row. It is aimed at the younger market and hosts flashing lights shows, falling confetti and an excellent line-up of music and DJs.

One of the most popular nightclubs in Dubai is the Cavalli Club, the brainchild of Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli. Launched as his latest lifestyle concept, the venue boasts a capacity of up to 1,500 people. The interior, it is claimed, cost in the region of $30 million and the Swarovski crystals are a visual reflection of this cost.

The club has three suspended lounge bars at The Fairmont hotel, and although very ostentatious, it has been bringing in the youth of Dubai since it opened. Look out for the prominent RC insignia, Robert Cavalli’s trademark, which is everywhere.

Trilogy nightclub offers a very spacious environment with two dance floors divided into three floors. The interior is a combination of traditional and modern architecture with an Arabic theme and music is varied along the lines of reggae and hip-hop to lounge and soul. Note that the Trilogy Rooftop is closed during the summer months.

Boudoir nightclub, in the marine district of Dubai, has a Parisian ambiance which makes it very popular with the expatriate community. The venue attracts a very glamorous crowd but tends to veer towards smartly dressed couples.

Cirque Du Soir Dubai took over the space occupied by Club 400 in the Fairmont Hotel Dubai. This is a playful and adventurous nightclub that boasts a big-top dance space arranged in a main dance floor. This is an alternative venue to the mainstream nightclubs in Dubai and is very popular with young partygoers.
