Why a Break on a Grecian Shore Could Help Your Mental Wellbeing

Travel Blog - Ross French - April 20, 2015

Is life bogging you down? You need time to kick back, relax, and take a moment – and where else is better to do this than the sunny beaches of Greece, where the pace of life is slow, and the seas are beautifully aquamarine?

Reducing Stress

Stress has an extremely detrimental effect on your mental and physical health. Pushing yourself too hard can lead to complete burnout, so schedule yourself time to just lounge around on a beautiful beach in Greece, maybe with your favourite book and an ice-cold beer.

When you step on that plane, leave your worries at customs – they will be still there waiting for you when you get back, so don’t let them affect you now; this is your relaxation time. Escape from work and responsibility for a few weeks, and when you return, you’ll be better equipped to deal with your problems.

Strengthening Bonds

Of course, this only applies if you go with a significant other, or your family. Spending time with your loved ones on a Greek coast will give you time to spoil each other and strengthen your bonds. This closeness can be very rewarding, especially if you don’t have much time normally to devote to your favourite people. And, depending on what you want to do on your holiday, there is a Greek island to match everyone’s taste.

Broaden Your Horizons

Learning about new cultures, history, and ways of thinking will help expand your mind passed your own country’s customs. Visiting new places can change you as a person, increase your self-confidence, and give you time to reflect on your life. If you need change in your life, a Greek holiday is a fantastic catalyst for this.

Eating Well

The Mediterranean is famous for one of the healthiest diets in the world, and with good reason. Make the most of freshly caught fish (packed with omega 3s), olives, verdant vegetables, and rich glasses of red wine to be savoured on cooler nights. Eating well has a direct impact on how you feel, so relish every mouthful.

The Sun

As long as you protect yourself adequately with sun cream, the sun can improve your wellbeing, general outlook, and your body’s production of Vitamin D. Getting back to nature on a sunny day is a fantastic way to begin the healing process, if you are feeling depressed or anxious.

Exercising

Try to work exercise into your time-off. On the coast, you’re spoilt for choice, when it comes to outdoor pursuits. Early morning jogs on the beach are an amazing start to any day, and running on sand is far more difficult than on a flat pavement (meaning that you get a better workout!). If jogging isn’t your thing, coastal walks are a great way to explore the area and take in the scenery at a leisurely pace. And, of course, there is always rock climbing or scrambling for the adventurous of heart.

Once you’re bored of landlubber activities, the sea is a fantastic source of healthy exercise, all within the cool water. Try your hand at surfing or bodyboarding. That failing, a morning swim is a highly invigorating way to stretch your legs before breakfast. You’ll be feeling better before you know it.
