Best Gear for Digital Nomad Musicians

Travel Blog, Travel Tips - Ross French - December 21, 2021

When you want to give the nomad life a try, but you can’t imagine leaving your musical life behind, there are some great solutions. While it can be hard carrying around a piano or guitar everywhere you go, it’s possible to still have a robust musical life while you travel the world. If you’re a multi-talented musician, you have even more opportunities to play no matter where you go.

Here are some of the best technologies and gear that can help you play music and see new and exciting places.

Learn Multiple Instruments

When you know how to play more than one instrument it can help you tremendously. While you may have a house filled with multiple musical instruments large and small, you know you can’t bring your baby grand on the road with you. Learning to play more than one instrument means that you can carry something as small as a flute or as large as a guitar on your journeys. Plus, knowing how to play more than one instrument is fun for you and those around you.

Hard Sided Cases

Whether you’re carrying a violin or a guitar, you’ll want a hard-sided case. These can protect your gear on airplanes as you travel the world. You’ll also want a soft sided case that you can take with you once you get to your destination. Having multiple options allows you the freedom to go where you want, when you want and still get to play music on your journeys.

Extra Guitar Picks

Acoustic guitar picks can be hard to come by when you’re exploring tiny villages and remote locations around the world. Bring along extras so you’ll have what you need any time you’re ready to play. While of course you can play without them, having picks available during your trip makes it convenient and will keep your fingers from getting too raw.

Guitar Strings

It’s important to have extra strings on hand when you’re traveling with a guitar, a violin, or any stringed instrument. Some places won’t have a music shop nearby. It’s always a bummer when a string breaks, but keeping spares with you means that you won’t need to go searching the countryside for a new one. When there is a language barrier, it can be especially difficult to communicate what you need. For many people, playing music is a way to relieve stress, and for others, it helps them connect spiritually with their faith. Having the tools you need available to you as a digital nomad will help you stay connected.

Quality Music Production Computer

If part of your musical process involves music production, there are multiple ways to do this while on the go. Digital nomads often have a computer anyway, and having one that can handle the challenges of music production is critical for musicians. A great computer will have the memory and power to handle your creativity. Being in new places can often inspire you to develop new music and new songs. Having a computer with you means you can do everything you need.

Software for Music Creation

In addition to a great computer, you’ll need some of the best software to handle your creativity. There are music production and creation programs that can handle multiple tracks, where you can create digital sounds and so much more. There are both free and paid for options where you can develop new songs and have fun making music using technology.

Music Apps

Your mobile devices can be used for multiple purposes. When it comes to music, there is no need for you to bring a metronome or a guitar tuner if you have a smart device with you. You’ll be able to download apps that can perform many of these functions. This is helpful for the digital nomad who wants to travel light and also play music around the world.

Final Thoughts

There are many ways for the digital nomad to stay on top of playing music. Whether you’re going to the jungles of Brazil, or the cities of Europe, you don’t need to leave your musical talent behind. If you need to pack super light, a flute, violin, or even a harmonica can be packed easily in your bags. When you’re going to a destination that allows for something bigger, you might be able to bring along your guitar or even smaller electric keyboard. You’ll have everything you need to play music when you also think of ways to incorporate technology. With the right apps and devices you can create new music without even picking up an instrument.
