5 Tips for a Driving Trip Around Australia

Australia - Ross French - March 31, 2016

Australia

If you are having a holiday in Australia, the best way to enjoy the country is to perhaps go on a road trip. Driving around is fairly easy especially because of their modern roads. This is a good way to have a slow-paced vacation and to enjoy its many destinations. To make the most out of it, however, make sure to follow the tips that will be mentioned below.

Find the Right Vehicle

One of the first things that you should do, and perhaps one of the most important, would be finding the vehicle that you will use in your road trip. You can opt for an RV, campervan, or motorhome. You can also just opt for a regular car and just find accommodations where you can sleep along the way. You can research from websites like Caravan Camping Sales, CarPoint, and Gumtree, among others. You might also want to check The Caravan Motorhome Club of Australia.

Follow the Rules

Like in anywhere else, there are rules that must be followed. However, the rules from your home country may be different from the road regulations in Australia. Drunk driving and speeding, of course, should never be done at all times. There are checkpoints in different locations wherein your breath will be monitored for alcohol. If you research and follow the rules, you should not have any problem. It’s also important to check your license ahead of travelling and what permissions you have.

Don’t Drive at Night

This is one good advice for anyone who plans to explore Australia through road tripping. Dusk and dawn should also be avoided, as much as possible. Many of the animals in Australia are nocturnal, which means that they are out only at night. Emus and kangaroos are commonly seen on the road. More often than not, even if you are careful, you might still end up hitting stray animals. With this, it would be best if you can just avoid driving at night. This will also be a good thing since you are in an unfamiliar territory.

Choose your Route Wisely

The choices when it comes to routes for your road trip can be overwhelming. With this, one of the best routes that can be taken into consideration would be the Great Ocean Road, which stretches to a distance of 160 miles. If you have more days to spare, your holiday will be epic if you take the East Coast route, which will take you from Sydney to Cairns, if you want to do this you can hire a camper from a Sydney depot and drive it to Cairns. This is probably the most popular route, which means that it will also be one of the easiest.

Plan Ahead of Time

This is especially true if you plan to camp and if you are travelling on a busy season. There are many campsites across Australia. To avoid frustration, it would be best to book your slot in advance. The same thing is true when it comes to car rentals. The earlier you plan, the cheaper the trip will be. There are many maps that you can download online, which will help you to get things in order.
