What to Pack to Perk Up a Capsule Wardrobe

Travel Blog, Travel Tips - Ross French - December 12, 2022

Capsule wardrobes are so great for vacationing because they give you a ton of flexibility with mixing and matching pieces to create outfits, but also the freedom to not be encumbered by a ton of heavy luggage. The downside of capsule packing is that you have to rely on some failsafe, basic colors, since they will be the backbone of your color scheme.

Some of the best moments of travel are unexpected opportunities, hanging out with someone new, posing in front of something delightful, or even participating in a lovely event. If you bring a couple of small items that add panache to your basic ensemble, you’ll feel more ready to rise to any occasion.

A Colorful Scarf

A colorful scarf is such a versatile piece, you might never travel without one again after you read this. Of course, you can tie it around your neck in a variety of ways, with clever knots and loops. That’s the classic use. You can also wear it in your hair as a chic headband or kerchief to keep your strands calm in the wind. While you’re at it, consider wrapping it around your sunhat, as a way to add flair and interest.

Even if you don’t want it on your body, you can tie it to the strap of your handbag. Doing so adds color and provides you with the bonus of having it on hand in case you need it. Some religious sites require head coverings and there may be times when you want to be able to cover your face. Having a scarf at the ready will be a big help.

A Light Scent

Carrying either a travel-size perfume spritzer, body spray, or some lovely scented hand lotion with you can augment your style and your experience. Wearing a beautiful fragrance makes you feel wonderful, more confident, and more attractive. While you may not need or want any for a stroll through an art museum, you’ll be glad you have it with you if you’ve had a bit of a sweaty workout, walking around, or if you are invited to join people for an event.

Let’s also face the reality that not every aspect of travel smells like roses. You are bound to encounter some unpleasant odors, like uncollected trash, unpleasant public restrooms, and the like. If you use a scented hand lotion, it will be a relief to be able to hold a scented hand up to your nose. If you carry body spray or perfume, consider giving your scarf a spritz. You’ll be able to elegantly hold it up to your nose, or wrap it around your neck and burrow your nose down into one of your favorite aromas, rather than whatever foulness is in the atmosphere around you.

Lip Gloss

Lip gloss is a travel boon. It’s probably the most versatile bit of makeup in existence. It’s a quick way to brighten up your face and be ready for whatever pops up. The big bonus with lip gloss specifically is that you don’t have to look in the mirror to apply it. Choose one with a tint that is just a couple of shades deeper than your bare lip for a subtle pick-me-up. Choose one with more color for a bolder look.

Red Lipstick

If you think you can’t pull off red lipstick, you are wrong. You just haven’t found the right color. Seriously, the right red lipstick is a total power move. It signals strength, poise, and being prepared for anything. It’s an immediate way to take an outfit from plain to wow.

Bold Earrings

Earrings are a great wardrobe addition because they are so small and lightweight. You can even stash them in your day bag in case you get invited to something swell. These days, big statement earrings are very wearable because they are made of light materials. If you pack one pair of boho chic dangle earrings, one pair of elegant studs, and one pair of sparkly metallic hoops, you will add instant depth to your wardrobe options.

A Brooch

Brooches are, like earrings, a way to add a point of interest to an outfit without having to haul anything large or heavy in your small suitcase. A pretty pin can be worn on a blouse, jacket, scarf, hat, or even in your hair, attached to a hair tie.
