Glowing on the Go: Can Your Skin Have Its Own Vacay?

Travel Blog - Ross French - April 15, 2024

Travel skincare Photos from the 2015 Summer Journeys West Coast trip led by David Buth. The trip began in Grand Rapids, MI went through Utah, San Diego, Oregon, Wyoming and back home to Michigan.

When we pack our bags and set off to explore new horizons, it’s not just our spirits that need uplifting — our skin demands its share of care, too! Amidst the excitement of exploring new places, it’s easy to overlook our skin’s needs, leading to unwelcome souvenirs like dryness or sunburn. But how do you keep your skin pampered and protected while on the move? Let’s dive into the ultimate guide to keeping your skin radiant, no matter where your travels take you.

Sun Protection: Your Skin’s Best Friend

The first and most crucial step in any skincare routine, especially on vacation, is protecting your skin from the sun. Overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can cause sunburn, premature aging, and even increase the risk of skin cancer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapplying every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget to cover all exposed areas, including the often-overlooked spots like the tops of your ears, back of the neck, and your lips with an SPF lip balm. And remember, sun protection isn’t just about sunscreen; wearing hats, sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak sun hours are all things you should bring on any trip.

Stay Hydrated: Inside Out

Hydration is key to maintaining supple, vibrant skin. Traveling, especially in airplanes, can be incredibly dehydrating for your body and skin. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight to keep your hydration levels up. Carrying a reusable water bottle is a great way to ensure you always have water on hand. Additionally, incorporating hydrating serums or masks into your skincare routine can provide an extra hydration boost that your skin will thank you for.

Gentle Cleansing: The Foundation of Vibrant Skin

Vacations mean exposure to new environments, pollutants, and possibly a lot of sweat. These can clog your pores and dull your complexion. Start and end your day by gently cleansing your face to remove impurities, excess oil, and sunscreen. Opt for a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. If you’re in a place where water quality is a concern, consider bringing micellar water, which requires no rinsing and is effective in removing dirt and makeup.

Moisturizers: Your Skin’s Hydration Hero

No matter your destination, moisturizing is a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine. Whether you’re hitting the ski slopes or basking on a sunny beach, your skin needs moisture to repair itself and stay healthy. For those spending time in colder climates, a heavier, cream-based moisturizer can help protect against harsh winds and dry air. On the flip side, a lighter, water-based moisturizer is perfect for humid destinations. But the real secret to a vacation-worthy glow? A tanning moisturizer is an absolute game-changer. It hydrates while giving your skin a beautiful, sun-kissed look without the risks associated with traditional sunbathing. Remember, applying moisturizer on damp skin after showering can increase absorption and effectiveness.

Exfoliation: Reveal Your Brightest Skin

Exfoliating 1-2 times a week helps remove dead skin cells that can make your skin look dull and can prevent your skincare products from penetrating deeply. However, it’s essential to not overdo it, especially when you’re exposed to the sun, as exfoliation can make your skin more sensitive. Choose a gentle exfoliator suited for your skin type, and always follow up with sunscreen during the day to protect that fresh, radiant layer of skin you’ve just revealed.

After-Sun Care: Soothe and Repair

Even with diligent sunscreen use, the sun can take a toll on your skin. Incorporate after-sun care products into your routine to soothe any redness or irritation. Look for ingredients like aloe vera or cucumber, which have natural cooling properties. These products not only calm the skin but also provide much-needed moisture to help repair any damage. After-sun care is not just for when you feel a burn; it’s a great way to keep your skin healthy throughout your trip.

Your Skin’s Vacation Mode Activated!

As you embark on your adventures, remember that your skin deserves to enjoy the journey just as much as you do. By following these essential steps, you can protect, pamper, and preserve your skin’s health and glow, no matter the destination. Sun protection, hydration, gentle cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliation, and after-sun care are the pillars of vacation skincare. They work in harmony to ensure your skin is as vibrant and joyful as your travel experiences. So, go ahead, explore the world, and let your skin bask in the glow of your adventures. Here’s to glowing skin and unforgettable travels!
