The Pros and Cons of Having Access to a Car in Chicago

Travel Blog, Travel Tips - Ross French - January 6, 2025

Car in Chicago

Chicago can be considered one of the most dynamic cities in the country, which is why so many people choose to live there. However, it can be difficult to get around; people are used to relying on cars as modes of transportation, but without one, is it possible to get around the city? Here are the pros and cons of owning a car in Chicago.

It’s Convenient

Chicago is the third largest city in the United States, which means that there’s a lot of ground to cover if you want to get through the city, making car rental chicago a great option. While the public transportation network is comprehensive, there are areas you can’t access. By renting a car in Chicago, you can travel at your convenience, taking full advantage of the city’s attractions or exploring further afield throughout the state.

Protects You From Harsh Weather

It can be great to walk around the city, but the weather can be unpredictable. Residents of Chicago endure frigid temperatures, biting wind chills, slippery sidewalks, and frequent snowfall and sleet every year. Standing outside in such conditions while waiting for public transportation can be quite unpleasant. Having a car allows you to reach your destination, whether it involves a lengthy journey to your workplace or a trip to the grocery store.

It’s Less Frustrating

Dependence on public transportation can lead to considerable frustration, particularly when trains or buses are overcrowded or when delays occur. Enduring extended periods on a bus or train during the winter months can be particularly burdensome. Owning a car can effectively address the shortcomings of public transportation.

Finding A Place To Park

Finding anywhere to park in Chicago is a living nightmare. For inexperienced drivers, parallel parking on bustling streets can be quite daunting. One may find themselves circling for hours in search of an available space. Additionally, some parking can come with an expensive price tag.

It’s Expensive

Owning a vehicle in Chicago can have a significant impact on your finances. Beyond the initial purchase price, you will need to pay for insurance, registration, maintenance, repairs, and parking permits. Fuel prices are going up as well, leading many people to sell their vehicles.

Rush Hour Traffic Sucks

Chicago is well-known for its significant traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours. Maneuvering through the intricate network of streets in downtown Chicago can be quite difficult, and individuals who are not well-acquainted with the city may easily find themselves disoriented amidst its numerous twists and turns.

If you’re just visiting Chicago or you’re looking to move there, it’s important to know what your options are when it comes to navigating the city. It might be better to simply rent a vehicle than to own one outright, minimizing the out-of-pocket costs you’ll have to deal with. With these pros and cons in mind, it doesn’t hurt to shop around and find a car rental place in Chicago that fits within your budget.
