Filled with 5th century monuments and landmarks, the capital of both the ancient and the modern Greece is a must visit destination. Athens is a beautiful city where you can get lost in the rich history of ancient Greece. The ancient Parthenon, the beautiful Temple of Poseidon, the museums, the history filled neighborhood – everything about this city makes a trip to Athens a necessary part of every Greek vacation. Here are few attractions and activities which you must try out in Athens, to enjoy the perfect trip to Greece .

Top Things to Do in Athens

Explore the Acropolis and visit the Parthenon:

The obvious must visit attraction while on a trip to Athens is the iconic Acropolis temple. It is the most important ancient site in the Western Europe. This ancient place is great for learning the history of Athens. The Parthenon is the crown jewel of this place. You can also enjoy the beautiful architectures and the beautiful views of the city and the nearby ruins.

Visit the Temple of Olympian Zeus:

Located in the center of Athens, the Temple of Olympian Zeus will be hard to miss when you visit here. The temple looks marvelous with its massive pillars and ancient ruins. It took 700 years to build this beauty, and whatever still standing of it is surely worth a visit while you are in Athens.

Day trip to the ancient Temple of Poseidon:

Located at a short distance from Athens, the Temple of Poseidon makes a perfect spot for a half day trip. This beautiful ancient temple of Poseidon, the Greek god of sea, is located on a hill overlooking the sea at the very tip of the Attiki Peninsula. Unlike the temples in Athens, this age old temple is still very well preserved. You can also watch the best sunsets from here in Greece, after Santorini.

Walk up Mount Lycabettus:

Rising up from the center of Athens, Mount Lycabettus is a limestone hill that towers above the Athenian cityscape. It is one of the most stunning natural features of Athens city. Walk up to the top of this green protrusion to experience one of the most beautiful views of the city down below. The mountain has great importance in Greek mythology as well. You can learn about the various folklores associated with the mountain if you go for a guided tour. There’s also a beautiful amphitheater situated at the summit. It is certainly one of the most impressive venues in the world, to watch your favorite artists play.

Visit the National Archaeological Museum:

This museum in Athens has one of the largest collections of ancient Greek artifacts. From ancient sculptures, jewelry, pots and vessels to a 2000 year old computer found in a shipwreck – the collection of this huge museum will surely blow you away.

Experience Greek food:

Greece is famous for its cuisine. And a trip to Athens must include a walk down the Greek food trail. Walk down the roads of Athens and enjoy the brilliant street food and the local delicacies the place has to offer. The Greek food will surely elevate your Greek vacation to a whole new level.
