TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO IN PISA

Italy - Ross French - September 7, 2017

Pisa attractions

Located in the Tuscany region of Central Italy, the beautiful city of Pisa is famous for its iconic monument, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, there’s much more to this beautiful city than just this world famous monument. You can enjoy a lot of outdoor activities, eat delicious food, enjoy the delectable local wine produced fresh in the Tuscany region and see the historic churches situated in the city. Very few tourists actually take time out to leave the touristy tower site. This leaves you a great chance to truly enjoy the local culture if you decide to explore the city. There are a lot of Pisa attractions in and around the city. Visiting them will truly give you an insight to the real Italy, waiting for you to explore. So the next time you travel to Europe , remember to check out these five must visit Pisa attractions.

Visit the Leaning Tower

Well, let’s get the obvious out of the way first. The Leaning Tower of Pisa truly needs no introduction. The iconic monument is truly one of the most famous attractions in Italy . You will find literally hundreds of tourists there crowding the ground at any point of the day. So visit there, go to the top for the view if you want/can and take your photos. Even you won’t believe yourself that you’ve been to Pisa if you don’t have a photo of the Leaning Tower.

Visit Camposanto

Camposanto is a great starting point to go off the beaten track in Pisa. One of the most underrated Pisa attractions, the Camposanto cemetery was built right where the Crusaders placed the soil they brought back from the Holy Land, according to legends. This legend surrounding this place makes it one of the most important Pisa attractions for the Italian people. During the middle ages, many people used to come here for pilgrimage.

See the Baptistery of St. John

This site is located right next to the famous Pisa attraction, the Leaning Tower. So you won’t have to go too much off the road to visit here. The construction of this Baptistery began as early as in the 12th century. The highly ornamental exterior, the beautifully carved relics full of details make this place of one of the most beautiful Pisa attractions you can see. However, the inside of the Baptistery is quite plain, so you won’t be missing much if you don’t go inside.

Check out the Duomo

The Duomo or the cathedral is the main feature of the Piazza del Duomo. This historic building is really stunning with all its prominent features. The bronze doors created by Andrea Pisano especially worth mentioning. This is another one of the Pisa attractions where you can visit to admire the beautiful architecture and the artistry involved in the design.

Visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina

Built between 1223-1230, this beautiful church is an extraordinary example of Gothic architecture. There are a lot of statues and tabernacles on the outside of the building for you to admire. Inside the church, you will get to see that main attraction of this site, the Madonna of the Rose.
